Where art, nature, and community share a home.
Our mission at Homeport Art House (HAH) is to offer dance artists the freedom to create work in a comfortable home environment, supported by Maine’s natural beauty, and to engage with the local community by sharing their process through informal presentations, workshops, or other offerings.
The concept of Homeport Art House is inspired by the layered woods and tidal flats that surround it. Ferns and fir trees, quiet moss, and tall poplars with their tiny leaves that make music in the wind, tidal changes, and unending avian activity reveal the diversity of life here. That diversity creates the backdrop that highlights the importance of each piece of nature’s bounty.
While in residence, artists are expected to engage with the community. Artists will determine how they engage with the residents of South Thomaston and how that engagement will best support their process. The opportunity for exchange and for learning exists equally for the artists and the community. HAH is committed to supporting artists who have a clear sense of the importance of this reciprocity. Basic marketing and technical assistance for sharings will be supported on site.
At HAH we encourage artists to bring their unique vision to their stay and to engage the local community in ways that support their research. At the core of this residency is the acknowledgment that reciprocity with the community offers the artist new insights into their process.
