offering artists the freedom to create work surrounded and supported by Maine’s natural beauty

Who we are

The concept of Homeport Art House is inspired by the layered woods and tidal flats that surround it. Ferns and fir trees, quiet moss, and tall poplars with their tiny leaves that make music in the wind, tidal changes, and unending avian activity reveal the diversity of life here. That diversity creates the backdrop that highlights the importance of each piece of nature’s bounty.

At HAH we encourage artists to bring their unique vision to their stay and to engage the local community in ways that support their research. At the core of this residency is the acknowledgment that reciprocity with the community offers the artist new insights into their process.

Community Engagement

Artists will determine how they will engage with the residents of South Thomaston and how that engagement will best support their process. The opportunity for exchange and for learning exists equally for the artists and the community. HAH is committed to supporting artists who have a clear sense of the importance of this reciprocity. Basic marketing and technical assistance for sharings will be supported on site.

is part of the house and grounds owned by Dale Andree and her husband Kyle Saxon, located in South Thomaston, a small village on the Weskeag River of Mid-Coast Maine. The residency is a one-week stay taking place during the Summer. Artists will live in the home with full access to the amenities, including 3 bedrooms with 5 beds (one king size), two bathrooms, and a full kitchen. The creative space includes a 20’ X 30’ dance studio, two acres of land on the Weskeag River, and a tidal inlet off Penobscot Bay. Kayaks are available for use when the tide is high. When the tide is low venturing into the mudflats is just as exciting. In addition, there are many local small, rocky beaches, wetlands, fishing harbors, and lighthouses only a short drive away. For museums, local shops, and delicious restaurants, Rockland, the art capital of mid-coast Maine, is a ten-minute drive from HAH.
